Male Cougar Population Dynamics

Map: Old Tom Territory

GPS tracking data of a population with multiple adult males shows little overlap in their ranges. Each color signifies the range of an individual male cougar.

Young Tom Territories

In a population where the adult males have been removed, multiple juvenile males will occupy the area, keeping larger, overlapping territories. This can drive females into habitat occupied by marginal game species, while the younger males are more likely to come into conflict with humans, livestock, and pets.
